With Thanks and Gratitude!

Hi Everyone! I will send formal thank you notes soon, but want to get a message out to thank you not only for the beautiful class gift but for the many individual gifts I received yesterday too. I am continuously amazed by the kindness of the families in my class, and the words "thank you" never seem to be enough. That said, please accept my sincerest thanks for the kind words and generous gifts. It is my honor to work with you and your kiddos.

Many Blessings,

Happy Holidays, Families of Room 9!  It's time for us to take a break, enjoy our sweet children, eat too many treats, and reconnect with our families, our friends, and ourselves.  I wish you the Merriest Christmas, and the Happiest Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Eid, or Diwali.  May you find comfort in your family's traditions, warmth in your heart, and peace in your soul.

I look forward to a beautiful 2016 with your children.  I remain so very grateful for your open hearts and generous spirits in sharing them with me everyday.

I'll send an update over break.  Have a great winter vacation!  Don't forget to read!

Interims and the Holiday Sing-A-Long

Hi Everyone!

My apologies!  I forgot to tell you in my weekly update that interim progress reports (typically referred to as "interims") go home tomorrow, December 14th.  Not all students receive an interim. If your child has one, it will be in the front clear pocket of his/her homework folder.  Please kindly sign the bottom, detach, and return it to me on Tuesday in the envelope provided with the interim.

Also, the Holiday Sing-a-Long on Friday is an event for Pinebrook students and staff only.  Families are not invited because we simply wouldn't fit everyone in the gym.  It gets pretty full in there with all the students and school staff.  It serves as a great send off to break...our Pinebrook family spends time together before the kiddos get lots of time with you.

Please let me know if you have any questions!  Thank you!

Weekly Update for Friday, December 11, 2015

Hi Everyone!  Happy Friday!

It's about to be my favorite week of the entire school year!  The anticipation for the upcoming Holiday is palpable, everyone is in a festive mood, and everyone is even kinder than normal.  We have some fun events planned this week to mark the Holiday, and will be finishing up some of our academic units too.  Here's your update....

Please Subscribe and Verify Your Email Address!
  • If you were directed to this post because of an email from me, and have not subscribed to this blog, PLEASE, PLEASE take a moment to subscribe using the "follow by email" widget to the right.  You will receive a message each time I post new content.  In January, I will NOT send an email to you each week to tell you I've posted a weekly update on the blog.  You will need to be subscribed to receive automatic notifications.
  • If you have subscribed to this blog, please be sure you verified your email address to ensure you receive automatic notifications of new content.
Supply Update:
  • Thank you for the dry erase markers!  I appreciate your generosity in helping to replenish our supply.  Dry erase markers are an ongoing need; I will accept donations at any time during the school year.
  • It's the time of year when crayons and markers dry up, become lost, or have just seen better days.  Feel free to send fresh crayons / markers with your child at any time.  These are NOT community supplies; your child will keep them at his/her desk.  I don't care if you send the 8 box of crayons or the 8,000 box of crayons!  Whatever your kiddo wants is fine with me.
Odds and Ends:
  • We previewed the Scholastic Book Fair today.  Book Fair shopping will be next week.  Students who bring money will shop during our recess.  The Book Fair will be open from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm on Tuesday for Family Shopping.  Please remember there is no obligation to buy.  Please refer to the information in your child's Thursday Folder for more details.
  • Please be sure to empty your child's Thursday folder and return it to school each Friday.  Please do not place any papers for me inside the Thursday folder; I simply don't have time to check each folder on Friday morning.  Please continue to put any papers for me in the front clear pocket of your child's homework folder.
  • If you are traveling over the Holidays, and your child will be absent from school, please kindly notify the school in advance.  You can send a message or note to me, which I will forward to the office.  You may also submit your notification to the office directly by using the "online absence excuse", which is found on the Pinebrook home page.  The link to the Pinebrook home page is here.
  • If you have pictures of your child engaged in a fun activity, with a pet, with family, etc....please feel free to email them to me if your child would like to share those photos with our class.
  • Please be sure to check the "important dates" section of this blog for upcoming events / activities / deadlines in our classroom and our school.
Reflex Math:
  • We are coming to a close on our addition and subtraction unit.  Now that the kids have learned the strategies for solving addition and subtraction facts, it's time to practice fact fluency!  Fact fluency is the "fancy way" to describe the ability to quickly recall addition and subtraction facts.  I cannot teach fact fluency.  You cannot teach fact fluency.  As with reading, it's about practice, practice, practice.  To promote practice, our school subscribes to an on-line program called Reflex Math.  The program's aim is to help kids build fact fluency.  Your child can now begin to log in to practice fact fluency via fun, arcade style games.  The log on information is in the "online resources" section of this blog.
Focus Areas for the Upcoming Week:
  • Reading:  We will read the Holiday Classic The Polar Express, and review many of the good reader strategies we have learned this year, such as predicting, retelling, making connections, and story mapping.
  • Math:  We will finish our fact families unit and review addition and subtraction strategies.  We will begin a unit on place value in January.
  • Writing:  We finished our personal narrative unit and will be completing a few different Holiday writing activities.
  • Science / Social Studies:  We will talk about Holiday traditions around the world with our annual Holidays Around the World on Wednesday morning.  During this time, the 1st grade teachers take turns rotating through each other's classrooms teaching the students about a holiday tradition from a particular country or culture.
  • There will be NO Word Study this week.
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!  The Mercer Band and Chorus will come Thursday morning for a Holiday concert, and on Friday, the entire school will pile into the gym for our annual Holiday Sing Along.  We sing Holiday songs from the many faith and cultural traditions represented at Pinebrook while the teachers and staff all take turns leading the songs.  Seriously....I can't even contain myself.  I am 41 years old, but at this time of year, I am a 6 year old.  It's one reason why YOUR children are "MY PEOPLE"!

As always, questions, comments, feedback, and suggestions are welcomed!  You can email me directly by clicking the words "contact me" at the top of this page, or by clicking the picture of the envelope inside the yellow circle at the top of this page.

Have a great weekend!  I am looking forward to baking cookies, wrapping gifts, watching "It's a Wonderful Life" with my boys, and visiting the Advent Labyrinth at our Church.  I am NOT looking forward to cleaning up the many messes our elf, Andy, seems to make throughout our house.

Tomorrow is Stuffed Animal and Pajama Day!

Hi Everyone!

The students have filled our class marble jar, and have voted to have (another) stuffed animal and pajama day.  Tomorrow, Wednesday, December 9th, students are invited to wear their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animal to school.  Stuffed animals should be small enough to fit inside your child's backpack.  Please note that slippers are NOT allowed in school.  We do have PE tomorrow; please be sure your child has sneakers!  Thank you!

Odds and Ends:
  • We previewed the items for sale at the Holiday Shop yesterday, and students may purchase items next Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.  If your child is purchasing Holiday Shop items, please kindly use the envelope I sent home yesterday to send his/her list and money next Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.  Please remember there is no obligation to buy.
  • We will preview the Scholastic Book Fair next Friday.  Book Fair shopping will be the week of December 14 - 18.  More information and details to follow, including the day/time of the Family Shopping Event.  Please remember there is no obligation to buy.
  • Please be sure to empty your child's Thursday folder and return it to school each Friday.  Please do not place any papers for me inside the Thursday folder; I simply don't have time to check each folder on Friday morning.  Please continue to put any papers for me in the front clear pocket of your child's homework folder.
  • Friday is our Library day.  Because of the upcoming Book Fair preview and shopping days, we will not have Library again until January.  The students checked out extra books today.  Please plan to keep these books until Friday, January 8, 2016.  (Did I just write 2016???)
  • "Look at Me Now" timelines are due no later than Thursday, December 10th.  If your child is done with his/her timeline, feel free to send it in early.  You can clear a spot on the dining room table for something else, because isn't that what we all use a dining room table for....to store things when we have NO idea where else to put them???  :)
  • We are running very low on dry erase markers.  We use them each day for morning work and math.  Please kindly consider donating some black dry erase markers to our classroom.  Thank you!
  • I will be out next Friday, December 11th.  Mrs. McKinley will be in for me.  I am taking a personal day to complete some Holiday preparations for my own family.  :)
Make Up Pictures:
  • Wednesday, December 9th is Picture Make Up Day.  This day is for students who were absent on Picture Day, did not have their picture taken and want to, or want to have their Fall Picture retaken.  If your child will be having his/her picture retaken, please email me for instructions regarding Picture retakes.
Focus Areas for the Upcoming Week:
  • Reading:  We will talk about the different reasons authors write books:  to inform, persuade, and entertain.  We will discuss the Author's Message in books we read.
  • Math:  We will finish our addition and subtraction unit and begin a short one-week unit on fact families.
  • Writing:  We will continue writing personal narrative stories.
  • Science / Social Studies:  We will finish talking about the adaptations humans, plants, and animals make in preparation or winter.
PHEW!  I think that's everything!  If you have questions about anything I've written here, you can email me by clicking the "contact me" tab at the top of this blog, or by clicking the picture of the envelope (it's inside the yellow circle at the top of the upper right hand side of this screen).

Meantime, I can't say enough how much I am loving your sweet kiddos!  It's the time of the school year when I've learned their personalities and their learning styles.  Now, I can really enjoy them and watch them GROW!  :)

Happy Friday!  I hope you have a fun weekend planned.  I am buying ingredients to make more cookies than my family can eat over 2 Holiday seasons, but the older I get, the more blessed I feel to be healthy and well and able to enjoy another Holiday with my beautiful boys. I think instead of "It's the most wonderful time of the year", the song should be "It's the most wonderful time for elastic-waist pants." #cookiesforbreakfastlunchanddinner

I'll be at the Holiday Shop/Pancake Breakfast at school tomorrow too!  Perhaps I'll see some of you there.
